Thomas J. Smith P.Eng is a licenced professional engineer with over 30 years of broadly based expertise and experience in product integrity and quality. His experience includes Regulatory Approvals (domestic and international), Product Safety, EMC/RF, Telecom requirements , environmental requirements (i.e. RoHS and WEEE) and Quality Management Systems (ISO9000 and ISO13485). He has worked on a wide variety of products, including medical devices, wired/radio/wireless telecommunications products, computers, consumer electronics, safety shutdown systems for nuclear power plants, and electronic downhole tools for the oil industry.
He worked for Certelecom Laboratories Inc. (now NEMKO Ottawa) as the Senior Certification Engineer, National Technical Systems as Project Manager and Product Safety Manager, Nortel Networks (Product Integrity Manager responsible for regulatory and international approvals), and Sanmina-SCI (Approvals, Safety and Quality Manager). He managed the establishment of the Nortel Networks Product Integrity organization and laboratory in Calgary supporting the Norstar, Terminals and Millennium Payphone business units.
He has participated on a number of standards developments committees for product safety, EMC and telecom for organizations such as Standards Council of Canada (SCC), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), and Industry Canada.
Tom has worked with customers in all regions of the globe, including Canada, United States, European Union. Japan, China and Australia.
Tom is a Senior Member of IEEE and a licenced Amateur Radio operator.
