SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Forged unified, high impact business growth structure. Non-collaborative approach among executives responsible for marketing, merchandising, vendor relations and sales had eroded Mattress Giants sales. Unified critical elements in business chain. Improved gross margins almost 4.8% annualized, adding $5M.
Rebuilt culture and processes of high potential but failing business. Virtually relaunched Sleepys. Eliminated ineffective, bullying corporate management style. Revamped compensation incentives. Within one year, transformed a company that was virtually insolvent into a growth performer with a $20M EBITDA. Further increased EBITDA 100% into double digits within next two years. Grew top line 63%. By the fourth year, drove EBITDA to top $60M on sales of $300M. Enabled company to ultimately reach $830M in revenue.
Drove major growth during recession that put competitors out of business. Directed continuing growth of Sleepys into dominant segment retailer in its eight-state territory with top line well into ten digits. Led negotiations with vendors for purchases totaling over $1.4B. Engineered yet another significant revenue jump, this time 20%+ despite economic downturn and a decrease in mattress sales among competitors nationally of 9.1%.
Customized individual store growth plans, maximizing profits of entire chain. Inherited poor sales / budgeting forecasting system at Sleepys. Introduced unprecedented strategy of planning for each store separately. Set up spreadsheets detailing sales, margin and expense trends for custom forecasts and performance goals. Produced EDITDAs in mid-to-upper teens in an industry where 5%-to-7% is typical and 10% is considered phenomenal.
Negotiated acquisition of largest competitor at zero cost. Combatted incursion of new competitor into Sleepys market. Duplicated product offerings at prices so low that competitor was compelled to sell virtually without profit to make any sales at all, drying up competitors top and bottom lines. Purchased competitor out of bankruptcy for $12M. Captured over $14M in additional incentives from competitors suppliers, recovering the entire purchase price of the acquisition plus $2M additionally.
