Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhea in children and adults caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium or Giardia.

Dosage and administration
Nitazoxanide Tablets for children above 4 years of age
Children aged 4-11 years
a) 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 consecutive days for Amoebiasis, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidiosis and Helminthic infections.b) 1 tablet every 12 hours for 7 consecutive days for Fasciolasis.
Patients above 12 years of age
a) 2 tablets every 12 hours for 3 consecutive days for Amoebiasis, Giardiasis, Cryptosporidiosis and Helminthic infections.b) 2 1/2 tablet every 12 hours for 7 consecutive days for Fasciolasis.
Indications and Usage
Diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia.
Amebiasis and helminth infections.
Mechanism of action Nitazoxanide, a synthetic antiprotozoal agent. Nitazoxanide is well absorbed from GIT. It interferes with the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme dependent electron transfer reaction which is essential to anaerobic glucose energy metabolism. This results in cell swelling, membrane damage resulting in dysfunction of the parasite.
