Advanced periodontitis is a very serious condition. What starts out as gingivitis and becomes periodontitis can become advanced if it is not treated early on. This stage of periodontitis affects the teeth and jaw bones and can spread infection to them. Teeth that become infected or jaw bones around teeth that are infected bring a risk of the teeth falling out. Avulsed teeth from infection can be reinserted or replaced, but it is definitely best not to get to this point.

Treatments for advanced periodontitis include surgery, bone and skin grafts, tissue regeneration, and enamel matrix derivative application. All of these treatment options will either stimulate regrowth of the healthy tissue or replace infected tissue or bone. Antibiotics and proper hygiene are not enough to reverse this late stage of infection, but proper hygiene before this point can help prevent it. Be sure to get regular checkups to avoid getting advanced periodontitis.
